|Gallery Name:||Jordan Straker Wood and Gourd Carvings|
Artist Bio:Jordan Straker started carving in 1988 as therapy for early onset arthritis - and on a dare from his brother to complete any project contained in the manual '1001 things to do with a Dremel.' That dare turned into a Best of Show award at a local wood carving competition, then another at an international competition then approximately 300 more at expert level shows throughout Canada and the US. "I'd say it was the desire to impress a judge that made me the detail monster I am today." Straker claims. With a box full of forgotten ribbons and a wall papered with 13 award winning Calgary Stampede buckles, Jordan doesn't compete any longer but still holds tightly to his Dremels and his highly detailed style of carving whether it be with wood, clay, high density foam or dried gourds. His leather-look depictions of wood carved chaps, gun holsters and native clothing have caught the attention of art collectors world wide and his recent similarly themed dried gourd carvings are definitely not far behind! When he isn't carving, Jordan is an avid tennis player, and currently lives in Calgary Alberta with his lovely wife and tennis partner, Laura.
2014 will be my first time attending the Western Masters and I'm looking forward to it.
